I know that Newton's 2nd law of motion if $$F = ma.$$ But i saw an equation that the law is stated as:

    $$m * (d^2x/dt^2) = - dV/dx.$$

I understand the first part of the equation, but i don't understand the second part (with the minus sign).

    How $$- dV/dx = F?$$
