ArcGIS for Desktop crashing when selecting polygons

I have ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.1 on my Windows 10 64-bit laptop. I recently installed it. I am digitizing some TIF files. When (in an editing session) I try to select a certain polygon (shown below), it hangs and then crashes, giving me the error message "ArcGIS Desktop has encountered a serious application error".

The application is otherwise very smooth. I am working locally, not an a network. The polygons are not very large so I don't think it's a memory issue or anything. Selecting more than 2 polygons appears to be the only thing that causes it to crash. I tried disabling the background geoprocessing options as suggested by this post but it still keeps crashing.
